The castle of Altomonte, is perched at the top of the village, right in the centre of the ancient medieval village, dates back to the 12th century. The building, conditioned by the contours of the land, has an irregular plan, articulated around a modest central courtyard. The exterior elevations feature characteristic elements such as jambs, corbels, balconies and loggias. In the inner courtyard, there is a beautiful single flight staircase, with the balcony covered by a three-arched loggia with a wooden roof, in which traces of fresco paintings of fair workmanship can be seen. The staircase leads into a vast room recently created on the site of the ballroom. There are beautiful surviving parts of the exposed trusses frescoed with mythological scenes, dating from the end of the 16th century. The Castle, adjacent to the Norman Tower, was enlarged over time by the various feudal lords of the village with a series of constructions that stretched up to the edge of the cliff.
