Dario Mugnaioli’s Il Giardino del Centro Storico offers to its guests four cosy apartments, built inside the Castle of Montemerano, in a completely renovated environment that dates back to 1400 and 1600. Furnished with a simple but elegant taste, these apartments let you enjoy to the fullest the atmosphere and the charm of this medieval village, in the Maremma countryside. They are not only architecturally appealing but they are all very versatile too. The old spaces of the castle were connected with each other and, to satisfy the needs of numerous groups, they can be connected again if necessary. The name that Dario gave to its business comes from the enchanting pergola that was waiting to be enhanced in front of one of the apartments. Dario then converted it into a garden where, every day, he takes care of it and let the plants and the herbs of his Maremma grow.
Since the mid-50s, Dario’s family made the hospitality one of its main strength and an excellent facility. From Montemerano for generations, the Mugnaioli family manages the only bar of the old town centre, the Glicine Eventi, situated right at the beginning of the village. The word “eventi” is very important because the Glicine (wisteria) is not only a bar but also the real (and unique) meeting point for tourists and the people of Montemerano. Overlooking a gracious small square, the sight gets lost in the Maremma countryside. In the centre of the square a monumental fountain, more than a century old, is the symbol of the arrival of drinking water to Montemerano.
From April to September, the Glicine blooms and becomes a magical, intense and essential place. Indeed the agenda that the Mugnaioli family offers to its guests is full of events: from music to cinema, to theatre and also cultural festivals that entertain the customers. On some nights you can also listen to some stories and the History of the village and appreciate the charm of the Terme di Saturnia, not so far from the village. And also sport events, photography exhibitions, musical nights with jazz, blues and local music with all the bands. Glee and hospitality: staying together. On Sunday morning, the Glicine offers also the matinée to enjoy peace and relax with background music. And obviously you cannot miss the genuine food of this land. In addition to breakfast, Dario and his family make fanciful salads and cheese and meat platters, made with farm-to-table products that comes from the producers of the farmlands that you can admire from the square. Really famous and not to be missed are the crostoni (toasted bread) with Tuscan oil, and especially the ones with sausage, tomato and mozzarella cheese. The tomato and the oil are family products too. Come and get to know them!
