Ferentino is one of the most charming villages in the Ciociaria region, where history, archaeology and traditions intertwine to form a unique heritage. From the imposing megalithic walls to the Acropolis, and from the Roman monuments to the medieval churches, the historic centre tells the story of over two thousand years of history in the heart of the Sacco Valley.

Perched on a hill overlooking the Sacco Valley, Ferentino is one of the most fascinating historic towns in Ciociaria, a place where over two thousand years of history coexist with an archaeological, artistic and religious heritage of extraordinary value. Its origins are shrouded in history and legend: according to tradition, it was the god Saturn, exiled from Olympus, who founded the town and introduced the arts and crafts to these fertile lands. It is no coincidence that the Latin name Ferentinum, derived from the verb ferre (“to produce”), evokes the very richness and fertility of the area.
The undisputed symbol of the town is its imposing megalithic walls, also known as Cyclopean walls: a rampart over 2.5 kilometres long, built from enormous stone blocks fitted together perfectly without the use of mortar. Even today, they remain one of the most important examples of polygonal architecture in central Italy and enclose the ancient Acropolis, the monumental heart of the town, accessible through evocative historic gates such as the famous Porta Sanguinaria and Porta Casamari.
Thanks to its strategic location along the ancient Via Latina, Ferentino was contested by the Hernici, the Volsci and the Romans before becoming a loyal ally of Rome. The Roman era left behind remains that are still perfectly recognisable, including the Roman Covered Market, one of the best-preserved of its kind, the ruins of the Roman Theatre, the ancient aqueduct, the cobbled surface of the Via Latina and the famous Testament of Aulus Quintilius Priscus, carved directly into the rock.
Strolling through the historic centre, one discovers a city that reached its peak of splendour in the Middle Ages, becoming, for over three centuries, the privileged seat of the popes and the capital of the ancient Provinces of Campagna and Marittima. Authentic masterpieces from this period remain, such as the Cathedral of Saints John and Paul, built on the Acropolis atop an ancient pagan temple and adorned with a magnificent Cosmatesque floor, and the monumental Abbey of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the most significant examples of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Lazio and a national monument.
Ferentino is also home to important religious and folk traditions. The Monastery of Saint Anthony the Abbot, founded by Pope Celestine V, houses the saint’s heart, which is still venerated by the community today. In his honour, the evocative Palio di Ferentino, also known as the Giostra dell’Anello, takes place every year, bringing the town to life with historical processions and competitions between the town’s districts. The procession dedicated to Saint Ambrose, the town’s patron saint, and the traditional Infiorata del Corpus Domini are also deeply cherished.
In addition to its historical heritage, the area offers places of great natural interest such as Lake Canterno, a protected oasis surrounded by greenery, and the renowned Terme di Pompeo, fed by springs known since Roman times and still appreciated today for the beneficial properties of their waters.
With its ancient walls, millennia-old monuments, panoramic views and traditions handed down through the centuries, Ferentino is one of the most fascinating destinations in Lazio. It is a village that brings to life the great history of central Italy through its unique archaeological heritage, monumental churches and a cultural identity that continues to thrive in its squares, festivals and ancient streets.
