Palo della Cuccagna
Event description
On 18 July, Lazise celebrates the historic 90th edition of the Palo della Cuccagna, one of the most distinctive and entertaining summer events on Lake Garda.
This ancient folk tradition has its roots in peasant festivals, when the game involved climbing a vertical pole to claim food prizes placed at the top. In Lazise, however, the tradition has evolved into a unique and spectacular event: the pole, completely smeared with grease, is positioned horizontally over the old harbour, suspended above the lake’s water.
The aim of the participants is to run barefoot along the slippery pole and manage to pull off the flag at the end, holding it in their hand during the inevitable plunge into the water to win the final prize.
For generations, the young people of Lazise — the famous buteloti — have been competing in this race, which is as spectacular as it is difficult, treating the public to hilarious moments of slips, falls and daring attempts suspended over the lake.
The event is one of the most authentic symbols of the Garda tradition and every year attracts thousands of spectators along the village’s historic harbour, creating a festive atmosphere filled with music, applause and summer conviviality.
The evening will conclude with the unmissable fireworks display, which will light up the lake and the village skyline, making this historic popular celebration even more evocative.
