Housed within the medieval fortress of Passignano sul Trasimeno is one of the region’s most unique museums: the Boat Museum. This small but fascinating museum illustrates the deep connection between lakeside communities and Italy’s inland waters through a valuable collection of traditional boats, fishing equipment and historical artefacts.
Opened in 2004, the museum was established with the aim of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage linked to navigation on the lakes, ponds and wetlands of the peninsula. The exhibition rooms house boats from Lake Trasimeno, Lake Piediluco and the Fucecchio Marshes, as well as a model of the distinctive fassoi, a traditional boat made from lake plants used on the Cabras Pond in Sardinia.
Among the most valuable artefacts are the ancient monoxyl boats, true archaeological rarities dating back to the 13th century. Made by hollowing out a single oak trunk, these boats were discovered along the shores of Lake Trasimeno near Passignano and represent an extraordinary testament to medieval navigation and fishing techniques.
Outside the museum, visitors can see a reconstruction of the famous Barchetto del Gorro, which was used until the 1930s for fishing with a large trawl net known as a ‘gorro’. This faithful reconstruction offers a better understanding of the traditions and activities that sustained the local communities’ economy for centuries.
The museum tour is enriched by numerous thematic panels illustrating the evolution of traditional Italian boats, construction techniques, the history of navigation on inland waters, and the importance of fishing in the daily lives of lakeside communities. Thanks to this multidisciplinary approach, the museum offers an interpretation that combines historical, archaeological, linguistic and anthropological aspects.
A visit to the Boat Museum is an interesting complement to exploring the Rocca di Passignano and offers the chance to discover a little-known heritage that is nonetheless fundamental to understanding the history and identity of Lake Trasimeno. A recommended stop for families, history enthusiasts and anyone wishing to delve deeper into the traditions that have shaped this fascinating part of Umbria.
