Church of San Paolo Apostolo

Church of San Paolo Apostolo

The Church of San Paolo Apostolo in Zavattarello is the village’s parish church and is first mentioned in a document dating from 929, on the occasion of a stop made by the monks of Bobbio who were transporting the relics of St Columbanus to Pavia. Over the centuries, the building was altered and extended on several occasions; following major work in the 16th century, it was reconsecrated in 1520 by the Bishop of Piacenza, Pietro de Reconda.

The current façade, however, dates back to the 18th century, when it was built over the original structure. The building underwent further restoration on the occasion of the Jubilee in 2000, which helped to preserve its historical features.

Inside, in the apse, there is a large early 17th-century altarpiece in finely carved gilded wood. At the centre of the structure is a 15th-century oil painting depicting the Madonna and Child with the Devil, a work of particular artistic and devotional interest.
