Archaeological Area of the Roman City of Mevaniola

Palazzo del Podestà  and the historic center of Galeata

The Archaeological Area of the Roman City of Mevaniola in Galeata is a site of extraordinary historical and archaeological value that should not be missed. Excavations conducted by the Soprintendenza Archeologica dell’Emilia-Romagna have brought to light several structures related to the urban layout of the ancient Roman city.

Among the visible structures, the remains of the thermal building and the small theater can be partially admired. The theater, dating back to the first century B.C., has a special feature: it differs from the Roman architectural model and instead approaches Greek-Hellenistic models, with a perfectly circular orchestra tangent to the stage.

This gives the site a fascinating and unique atmosphere. A portion of the necropolis was explored in 1993, and the valuable grave goods unearthed are displayed in the “Mons. Domenico Mambrini” Civic Museum.

The name Mevaniola is reminiscent of the ancient city of Mevania, now known as Bevagna in Umbria, but the relationship between the two cities and place names is still not entirely clear.
