Mons. Domenico Mambrini Civic Museum

The Mambrini Archaeological Civic Museum in Galeata è a must-see destination for history and archaeology enthusiasts. Located in the charming convent of the Minor Fathers of Pianetto, near the archaeological area of the Roman city of Mevaniola, the museum tells the ancient history of the territory of Galeata through a vast collection of artifacts from various eras.
Inside the museum, the objects are carefully displayed and enhanced by the Tuscan-style Renaissance architecture of the convent building, creating a pleasant dialogue between the works and the spaces. The museum è divided into two sections: one dedicated to archaeology and the other to history and art.
The archaeology section offers a fascinating tour that starts with the collection of Monsignor Domenico Mambrini, founder of the museum and a passionate collector of antiquities. From here, it traverses the archaeological sites of the area, with their pre-protohistoric finds, to the room dedicated to the Roman city of Mevaniola, where the magnificent dog-headed honorary key and the moving funerary stele of Rubria Tertulla stand out.   The itinerary continues with Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, displaying prestigious finds such as the relief depicting the meeting between the Holy Ellero and the King of the Ostrogoths Theodoric, and the statue-column depicting the Infancy of St. Nicolò.
In the historical-artistic section, on the other hand, there are works of art that testify to the influence of Florence. Worth mentioning are the noble coat of arms in pietra serena attributed to Desiderio da Settignano and frescoes from the Pantano church. The museum offers visitors a rich program of events, workshops and educational activities for schools and adults, providing a dynamic and engaging experience in archaeology and ancient art.
