Since 1998, the Department of Archaeology of the University of Bologna has resumed excavations, identifying both Roman and Theodoric structures. In particular, for the Theodoric period (late 5th – 6th century AD), è an elegant thermal area has been discovered that was part of an extensive and wealthy lordly residence, with functions of territorial control over the upper Bidente valley. Research has brought to light the spaces of the Roman baths, with a succession of artificially heated rooms (calidarium and tepidarium) and cold rooms (frigidarium). Recently, portions of the residential and ceremonial sector have been discovered with splendid floor mosaics (currently not on museum display).
