Church of Santa Maria della Catena

Church of Santa Maria della Catena

The Church of Santa Maria della Catena in Geraci Siculo, situated near the ancient Porta Vasana, dates back to the 15th century and is closely linked to the spread of the cult of the Madonna della Catena in Sicily. This cult originated from the famous miracle that took place in Palermo in 1392, when, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary saved three young men condemned to death by breaking the chains that bound them.

The building is a small hall covered by a wooden roof, in which the original trusses are still visible, resting on carved corbels decorated with human faces. These elements represent a significant example of Sicilian building tradition, echoing similar features found in more important buildings, such as Cefalù Cathedral.

Inside, there is a 17th-century oval canvas depicting the Madonna della Catena, flanked by a statue of Saint Roch, which is still polychrome and well-preserved. Although inspired by 16th-century models, the sculpture is attributed to Giancola Viviano and dates from the second decade of the 17th century.

As a whole, the church represents a precious place of worship and an important testament to the artistic and religious tradition of the Geraci Siculo area.
