The Church of Santa Maria delle Colonne, situated on the outskirts of Grotte di Castro, is a building of very ancient origins, dating back to a period between the 12th and 13th centuries. In the past, it was known as Santa Maria dei Monaci, reflecting its connection with the religious communities that frequented this isolated spot.

The building, now a single-nave structure ending in a small apse, has undergone various alterations over the centuries that have partly transformed its original appearance, whilst retaining a simple and intimate character.

Inside, there are interesting frescoes from various periods, including a Madonna Enthroned with the Infant Jesus – already mentioned in a pastoral visit in 1629 – as well as depictions of the Archangel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary and the scene of the Annunciation.

Of particular interest are also the remains of Romanesque capitals decorated with foliage motifs, human heads and figures of peacocks, elements that evoke the symbolic and decorative language of medieval art.

As a whole, the church stands as a precious testament to the spirituality and sacred art of the region, set within a quiet and evocative setting.
