Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta

The Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Ala is one of the main religious and historical landmarks of the Vallagarina, situated on high ground overlooking the village.

Its origins are very ancient: it is believed to stand on the ruins of a chapel linked to the ancient castle, which already existed in medieval times. The first documented mention dates back to 1178, but over the centuries the building was rebuilt and extended on several occasions. It was first consecrated in 1468 by Bishop Albertino da Tridino, followed by further alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the church took on a larger and more solemn layout.

Its current appearance is the result of numerous renovations, including those following the severe damage sustained during the First World War: a shell struck the building in 1916, necessitating major restoration work which concluded with its reconsecration in 1929.

The imposing façade, crowned by a pediment and once decorated with ornamental motifs, now features a single central portal in the Baroque style, above which stands the statue of the Virgin of the Assumption, patron saint of the city. Adjacent to the church stands the bell tower in exposed stone, characterised by its distinctive onion-shaped dome.

The interior features a single nave, flanked by side chapels framed by pilasters and round arches. The raised chancel leads to the decorated semicircular apse, whilst the entire space is embellished with frescoes and an elaborate decorative scheme.

Among the most significant features are the nine polychrome marble altars, including the majestic high altar and the one dedicated to Saint Lucy, patron saint of velvet makers, with an altarpiece attributed to the school of Giambettino Cignaroli. This link to the art of velvet-making recalls Ala’s textile tradition, once renowned for the production of fine velvets.

The adjoining rectory also houses a precious collection of liturgical vestments, including examples of authentic 18th-century Ala velvet.

Rich in history, art and traditions, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta today represents the spiritual heart of Ala, guardian of the memory and identity of the local community.
