The Franciscan Convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli stands on a picturesque hill overlooking the village of Badolato, offering one of the most captivating views of the Ionian coast of Calabria. Founded in the early 17th century, between 1602 and 1603, it is one of the region’s most significant monastic complexes, not only in terms of size but also for the historical and spiritual significance it holds.

Entrusted to the Franciscan Friars Minor, the convent was for centuries an active and vibrant religious centre. The structure, organised around two cloisters, reflects the typical convent architecture of the period, designed to combine community life, prayer and study within a contemplative setting surrounded by nature.

Inside the church, works of great interest are preserved. Among these, an 18th-century wooden crucifix attributed to Fra Diego da Careri stands out; he was a leading figure in Calabrian sacred art and also the creator of other works within the complex. Particularly striking is the wooden group of the Madonna of the Musician Angels, linked to a local folk tradition and recently restored, which bears witness to the community’s deep devotion.

L’edificio custodisce anche un elegante pergamo pensile settecentesco, elemento architettonico di grande pregio che arricchisce ulteriormente l’interno della chiesa, creando un dialogo armonioso tra arte e spiritualità.

Dopo essere rimasto di proprietà francescana fino agli anni Settanta del Novecento, il convento ha conosciuto una nuova fase della sua storia diventando sede della comunità di recupero “Mondo X”, mantenendo comunque viva la sua vocazione sociale e umana.

Ancora oggi la chiesa è aperta ai fedeli, soprattutto in occasione delle celebrazioni del Sabato Santo badolatese, uno dei momenti più intensi e partecipati della tradizione religiosa locale. Il Convento di Santa Maria degli Angeli continua così a essere un luogo carico di fascino, dove storia, fede e paesaggio si fondono in un’esperienza autentica.
