Augmented reality arrives in Arrone

Rediscover the past looking to the future. This could be the claim of the tourist initiative of Arrone, a small medieval village in the province of Terni. Among its valuable treasures stands the church of San Giovanni Battista, an architectural masterpiece in Gothic style, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, which houses within it votive frescoes by the Umbrian art school inspired by the great teachers Piero della Francesca and Filippo Lippi.

Thanks to the call for bids entitled “Recovery of minor cultural assets for their conservation and use”, the church is currently the subject of an important restoration. Not only: the most advanced augmented reality technologies will be made available to visitors to make their use a multimedia and interactive experience, with the innovative intent to enhance the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the church of Arrone. An educational system that does not forget tourism aimed at people with disabilities.

So we start with the AR (augmented reality) technology project to guide the visitor to discover Arrone’s history, with the possibility of having a multi-level look at what is being observed. It is an immediate approach to understanding the peculiarities of the numerous artistic assets, a real time machine that involves the creation of a downloadable app on smartphones and tablets, Android and iOS. «It’s a source of pride and satisfaction for this administration to carry on this project to communicate to tourists the artistic beauty of our village with innovative and modern technology», explained the mayor, Loreto Fioretti. The enchanting Arrone looks to the past, projecting itself into the future.
