Parish Church of St. Ambrose

The parish church of Sant’Ambrogio in Spigno Monferrato is an important architectural work located in the center of a large green lawn. The church, with its banded facade on Ligurian style, stands in striking isolation and is one of the most important monuments in the town.

The building has a basilical plan with three naves, divided by squat, fluted stone-rock columns with Tuscanic capitals. This Counter-Reformation typology gives the church an imposing majesty that makes it a very impressive place of worship.

Inside the church are numerous valuable artistic elements. These include an altarpiece with Madonna, Child and Saints dating from the late 16th century, a baptistery, and a stoup from the same period. In addition, the stucco altars and wooden furnishings are from a later period.

Of particular interest is the high altar with elegant balustrade, made in 1744. The inlaid marble pulpit, on the other hand, dates from 1750 and is another important decorative element of the building.

In the entrance portal, double columns on high plinths support an epistyle with a central inscription surmounted by decorative pine cones and a scroll pediment framing a niche inside of which lodges a statue of the titular figure. Engraved at the base of the statue is the date 1592. This historical detail gives the church even greater importance, as it testifies to its antiquity and its role in the history of the village.

The parish church of Sant’Ambrogio in Spigno Monferrato was built following the Ligurian architectural style, which is characterized by special attention to decorative details. The banded facade, for example, represents one of the distinctive elements of this architectural style.

The church is located in a picturesque place, surrounded by greenery and the quiet atmosphere of the village. The beautifully crafted 16th-century arch that leads to the village’s first cemetery represents an additional element of historical and artistic interest. Because of its grandeur and the beauty of its artistic details, the church is a must-see place of worship and tourist interest for those visiting the area.
