The Church of San Nicolò dell’Isola in Sestri Levante was built around 1151 in the Romanesque style, near the promontory known as Isola, probably on the site of an earlier place of worship. The building is one of the oldest examples of religious presence in this picturesque area overlooking the sea.
The church has a basilica-style layout divided into three naves, marked by stone columns with spherical and cubic capitals, supporting pointed arches. This combination of architectural elements gives the interior a sober yet harmonious appearance, typical of medieval Ligurian architecture.
The façade, built in the 15th century, features a pseudo-portico portal surmounted by a three-light window, whilst on either side of the building there are several medieval inscriptions and tombstones that bear witness to the site’s long history.
Next to the church stands the bell tower, topped by a pyramidal spire and featuring a belfry with mullioned windows, an element that completes the building’s architectural profile and accentuates its historic character.
