Sanctuary of Santa Rita da Cascia

The sanctuary of Santa Rita da Cascia is composed of different structures is that retrace the places where the saint lived, both for the reception of pilgrims. Originally the sanctuary was simply composed of a monastery and a small church that hosted the urn with the relics of Saint Rita; at the beginning of the XIX century the existing structures became inadequate for the increasing number of pilgrims who came to Cascia and was thus, thanks to the willingness of Mother Maria Teresa Fasce, which began the construction of a sanctuary capable of responding to the needs of the faithful: the complex includes two basilicas, a monastery, various multipurpose halls and a hostel.

The basilica is in the form of a Greek cross, characterized by four apses at the ends: in one of these opens the chapel of Santa Rita that hosts the sarcophagus of the saint.

The lower basilica instead, originally the crypt of the basilica cherish the tomb of Mother Maria Teresa Fasce and the mortal remains of the Blessed Simon Trusted, together to the miracle of the Eucharist; in the church are kept works of Luigi Filocamo and Armando Marrocco.

The monastery of Santa Rita da Cascia is the place where the saint lived for more than forty years his experience of monastic life there until his death: built in the XIII century, was originally entitled to Santa Maria Maddalena; was enlarged during the XVIII century and still hosts the sisters of the Augustinian community.

In the monastery one can observe some fundamental points of the life of Santa Rita, such as in the courtyard, with the drain, a screw and the characteristic holes on the wall, Lair of bees muraiole, the choir ancient, frescoes from the sixteenth century and paintings of the XVII and XVIII century, the oratory in which Santa Rita received the stigmata, different cells, one of which belonged to the santa and others which contain objects to it belonged as the wedding and several sarcophagi, and il roseto, recreated to remember the miracle of the rose and figs.
