Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bosco

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bosco, located in Serra San Bruno in the province of Vibo Valentia, is a place of great spiritual and cultural importance, immersed in a natural setting of extraordinary beauty. Surrounded by centuries-old white firs and young beech trees, the complex is an ideal refuge for pilgrims and tourists who wish to restore themselves in a serene and contemplative environment. Here, St. Bruno of Cologne spent the last ten years of his life, a period of intense spirituality that continues to draw visitors from all over the world.

The shrine, visited in 1984 by Pope John Paul II, is a place of celebration and recollection. The large forecourt, with its characteristic “St. Bruno’s Pond,” is a significant landmark, where the saint is said to have immersed himself to practice penance. The granite staircase, built in the 1950s, leads inside the church, which was rebuilt after the 1783 earthquake. This sacred space presents a simple and welcoming architecture, enriched by works of art and the imposing wooden statue of Santa Maria del Bosco, which dominates the high altar.

On the opposite side stands the “dormitory of St. Bruno,” where the saint is believed to have found refuge and where he was buried. Here, the marble statue by Stefano Pisani is a further tribute to the monk’s memory. The shrine is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of faith and tradition, which continues to live on through the devotion of its visitors.
