Church of the Exaltation of the Santa Croce

Church of the Exaltation of the Santa Croce

Built in 1721 and following the Greek-Byzantine rite, the Church of the Exaltation of the Santa Croce, situated in Piazza Vittorio Veneto in San Paolo Albanese, houses newly created Byzantine icons. It is particularly interesting to attend the Divine Liturgy, which is celebrated in Greek and Albanian.

During the most recent restoration, a fresco was uncovered on an altar in the right-hand aisle, depicting a chalice containing a host. What makes it unique is that the host is not round but square and bears an inscription in Greek (Iesùs Cristòs Nikà): the presence of the Greek inscription and the square shape of the host allow us, without a shadow of a doubt, to state that the church was used to celebrate Mass in the Greek rite.
In the local rite, the presence of statues of saints is not provided for, but only of icons: due to the mixing of rites that has taken place over the centuries, processions with statues are held in San Paolo.
