Hermitage of San Luca

Hermitage of San Luca

The Hermitage of San Luca is one of the most fascinating and secluded spots in Molise, nestled in the mountain woods between Pescopennataro and Capracotta. Situated at an altitude of over 1,500 metres, beneath an imposing limestone outcrop, this ancient hermitage overlooks the Sangro valley, offering spectacular views and an atmosphere of deep spiritual contemplation.

According to popular tradition, the site was used as a refuge by Saint Luke the Evangelist during his travels to the Middle East around 60 AD, when he was carrying the letters of the Apostle Paul to the early Christian communities. Although the historical origins of the hermitage are lost in time, the site is considered to be of ancient foundation and, over the centuries, welcomed numerous hermits who lived here in solitude and prayer until the early decades of the 20th century.

The hermitage is built in close harmony with the mountain and comprises three distinct areas: a small shelter for wayfarers and hermits, a cave used as a chapel, and a small church dedicated to Saint Luke. The shelter, built by making use of the natural rock outcrop and completed with wooden structures, still preserves a brazier and a simple altar, bearing witness to the austere life led here by the ancient hermits.

Next to it lies the evocative cave, carved directly into the limestone face. This space, transformed into a place of worship, houses the image of the saint and is characterised by a silent, mystical atmosphere, made all the more intense by its secluded location in the heart of the woods. A little further on stands the modern little church of St Luke, also built under the shelter of the rocky outcrop.

The hermitage is not only a place of spirituality but also a testament to historical memory. During the Second World War, in 1943, it was used as a refuge by some New Zealand soldiers who had escaped from the prison in Sulmona. The inhabitants of the neighbouring villages offered them help and protection, sometimes paying for this gesture of solidarity with their lives, as happened to the Fiadino brothers from Capracotta, who were captured and shot by German soldiers.

Surrounded by woods and mountain trails, the Hermitage of San Luca remains a place of peace and contemplation, where nature, history and faith come together against a backdrop of extraordinary beauty. A visit here offers a chance to immerse oneself in one of the most authentic and tranquil corners of the Molise Apennines.
