Church of St. Mary of the Conception

Chiesa di Santa Maria della Concezione

Situated in the heart of Onano, the Church of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, erected in 1784, represents an important cultural and spiritual hub of the Latium municipality.

The building has a classic single-nave plan with a semicircular apse. Inside, on either side of the nave, it houses a series of niches that house valuable sacred statues and works of art: from Our Lady of Sorrows, to the old wooden processional statue of St. Nicholas of Tolentino on one side, to St. Anthony of Padua, St. Joseph and St. Francis of Assisi on the other.

The church’s main feature is the church’s wooden altar.

The highlights of the church are the locally carved wooden urns containing the patron saints Tryphon and Dove, whose robe worn by the saint è an original stage costume from the Opera donated by Lina Cavalieri.

The origins of the place of worship are intertwined with the Franciscan monastic presence of the past. In fact, the church was originally connected to a convent of Franciscan friars who took care of it. As a reminder of this history, bone remains of these friars are visible under the floor through glass trapdoors.

Interesting peculiarities of the building è the refined altar area originally advanced from the semicircular wooden choir, encased in a marble canopy with composite columns and capital, and an altarpiece depicting the Immaculate among Saints.
