Church of Our Lady of Relief

The Church of Madonna del Soccorso is one of the most fascinating sights in Onano, a small town in the heart of Lazio. Also known as Madonna della Fontana, this historic church dates back to 1454 and boasts frescoes from the period.

Despite continuous renovations over the years that have caused the loss of much of the original frescoes, part of an altar fresco depicting “the Virgin and Saints” still remains visible. Although it is battered to the point that it is difficult to recognize the figures, one can still glimpse the features of the saint on the right, who still retains the original colors on the sinopia.

In 1968, during some restoration work, it was discovered that other frescoes were hidden under the lime paint on all the walls. Among them, an image of a saint with snakes and the figure of St. John the Baptist, both dating from the late 1500s, emerged.

Visit the Church of Madonna del Soccorso in Onano and discover traces of the past in this fascinating and historic building. With its rich history and unique frescoes, it is a must-see exploration for all art and history enthusiasts.
