Church of Our Lady of Grace at Onano

The Church of Our Lady of Grace è one of the oldest churches still standing in Onano, and è undoubtedly a historical and artistic treasure of the municipality located in the heart of Lazio.

The building dates back to Romanesque times and houses precious frescoes of the Sienese School, among which stands out the image of the Virgin and Child, a work attributed to the famous painter Sano di Pietro, active in Siena in the 15th century.

Important local figures such as the Monaldeschi family, feudal lords of Onano, helped to enrich it, commissioning works of art such as the image of the Virgin of Graces and placing their coat of arms on the great arch of the facade, later replaced by a rudimentary doe during the 1964 restoration.

In 1965 the Superintendent of Fine Arts restored the interior frescoes, bringing the church to a new splendor and making it one of the most remarkable examples of sacred art in the area.

Multiform over the centuries, the church has undergone several remodels due to earthquakes, wars and desire for beautification, while continuing, however, to maintain its innate beauty and enrich its walls with remarkable frescoes.

Today, the Church of Our Lady of Grace in Onano represents not only a fine example of Romanesque architecture and art, but also a place where one can appreciate the deep spirituality and exceptional historical and cultural heritage of Onano.
