The Parish Church of San Martino in Grauno is the hamlet’s main place of worship and stands as a significant testament to the religious history of the Val di Cembra.

The present building was constructed between 1863 and 1865, replacing the previous church dedicated to San Cristoforo, whose origins may date back as far as the 11th century. The first documented mention of this ancient place of worship appears in a will dated 1398. Over the centuries, the church underwent several extensions and gradually changed its dedication, until it was definitively named after San Martino from 1605 onwards.

The new 19th-century church was consecrated in 1878 by Giovanni Evangelista Haller and was elevated to parish status in 1943. Over time, it has undergone various restoration and liturgical adaptation works, including those carried out in the 1990s and in 2001, which have preserved its structure and decorations.

Externally, it features a simple gabled façade in the Neoclassical style, characterised by an architraved portal and a large lunette window that illuminates the interior. The bell tower, set slightly back on the right-hand side, is distinguished by its belfry with single-lancet windows and its octagonal pyramidal roof.

The interior consists of a single nave, divided into three bays and flanked by two symmetrical side chapels. The raised chancel houses both the historic high altar and the post-conciliar one. Of particular note is the magnificent 17th-century gilded wooden altar, one of the finest examples of Cembrana sculpture, together with the altarpiece depicting Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the saints. The fresco decorations are the work of the painter Gino Mattielli.

In addition to its artistic value, the church maintains a strong link with local tradition: every year, on 11 November, the community devoutly celebrates the feast of St Martin, a deeply felt occasion that unites faith, culture and the identity of the region.

The Church of San Martino is therefore not merely a religious building, but a place that tells the story of centuries of history, devotion and community life in the heart of Trentino.
