Church of Sant’Antioco

Church of Sant’Antioco

The Church of Sant’Antioco in Gavoi, dating back to the 15th century, stands at the foot of the “Su Craru” district, in a panoramic position overlooking the Gusana and Aratu valleys. The site has great historical and symbolic significance, as it is believed to have been the location of the village’s first cemetery, as evidenced by the human remains found here and now preserved on either side of the high altar.

Inside the church, on the right-hand side, stands the altar dedicated to the Crucifix, which comes from the now-demolished Church of Santa Croce, once situated on the site where the Town Hall now stands. The memory of that ancient building lives on in the name of the small square in front of it.

Of particular interest is also the presence, in a display case at the foot of the altar, of a relic of Saint Antioco, recently placed there and originating from the island of the same name. This element strengthens the community’s devotional bond with the saint, making the church a place that remains significant to this day for local faith and memory.
