Church of St. Mary of the Assumption

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, located in the heart of Civita, is a magnificent example of religious architecture dating back to the 17th century. Built in the early decades of the 1600s, it arose to replace an earlier building that could no longer meet the needs of a growing population. Its location in the town’s main square makes it a visual and cultural landmark, nestled among the old stone houses that characterize the village.

The exterior of the church is striking for its massive bell tower, adorned with elegant stucco bands that accentuate its verticality. The simple but charming facade overlooks a pretty little square, inviting visitors to enter and discover the beauty enclosed within. The basilical structure is characterized by late Baroque decorations, giving a sense of grandeur and refinement.

Inside, the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption is spacious and harmonious, with a three-aisle layout separated by shaped pillars. These architectural elements not only support the structure, but also create a visual path that guides the eye to the triumphal arch, which marks the entrance to the chancel. Here, the large iconostasis, adorned with beautiful icons, represents the spiritual heart of the church, drawing the attention of worshippers and visitors alike. The wide and solemn apse completes the interior setting, creating an atmosphere of sacredness and contemplation.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is not only a place of worship, but also a witness to local history and culture, representing the architectural and spiritual evolution of Civita. Every corner of this church tells stories of faith, art and community, making it a precious heritage to be preserved and enhanced.
