Church of Santa Maria del Carmine

The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine (Mother Church), located in Sersale, is an important example of religious architecture that encapsulates the history and spirituality of the local community. Built around 1630, the church was built through the efforts of the people on a hill that already housed a symbolic cross. Its dedication to Our Lady of Mount Carmel decreed its role as the town’s patron saint, with the celebration of the feast day on July 16, accompanied by a two-day fair.

The church’s architecture is characterized by a Renaissance style, with a neoclassical facade distinguished by its four tall fluted pilasters and statues of St. Anthony, St. Joseph, and the Madonna and Child. The entrance portal, rectangular and surmounted by a triangular tympanum, is accessible via a stone staircase that invites worshippers to enter. The bell tower, which also serves as a clock tower, is an imposing presence next to the church.

Inside, the church is divided into three naves, supported by decorated arches and pillars of Corinthian order. A notable feature is an 18th-century alabaster marble statuette of the Virgin, which is located to the right of the entrance. Next to the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine stands the Church of the Immaculate Conception, an oratory that preserves valuable paintings and a finely crafted wooden altar, evidence of Sersale’s rich artistic and spiritual heritage.
