Mother Church of Santa Maria dell’Olmo

Mother Church of Santa Maria dell’Olmo

The Mother Church of Santa Maria dell’Olmo in Castelmezzano is the main place of worship in this village in Basilicata, nestled amidst the spectacular scenery of the Lucanian Dolomites, and serves as a vital focal point for the community.

Its origins date back to ancient times, when the building consisted of a single nave flanked by four small side chapels, dedicated to Jesus Christ, Charity, Purgatory and Saint Anthony. By 1544, there were already seven altars, a sign of a vibrant religious and devotional life.

A major phase of transformation took place in 1870, when Archpriest Michele Arcangelo Volini oversaw a significant extension of the church: the central nave was extended, the sacristy was renovated, the bell tower was rebuilt and the two side aisles were added, giving the building the more spacious and harmonious appearance it retains to this day.

In the early 20th century, the church was further embellished thanks to contributions from emigrants from Castelmezzo living in the United States, who funded the construction of elegant marble altars, a testament to the strong bond between the local community and its fellow citizens abroad.

Inside, there are numerous works of great devotional value, including statues of Santa Maria dell’Olmo, the Madonna and Child, the Madonna del Bosco – Regina Pura, and the Madonna dell’Ascensione. Of particular interest are also the paintings adorning the church: the ‘Anime purganti’, the ‘Madonna del Carmelo’ and the ‘Sacra Famiglia’, also known as the ‘Trinità Terrestre’, attributed to the 17th-century painter Giovanni De Gregorio.

A striking feature of the complex is the bell tower, which houses a collection of bells from different periods: the oldest dates back to 1666, followed by those from 1768, 1820 and 1948, bearing witness to the church’s historical and religious continuity.

Today, the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell’Olmo is not only a place of worship but also a precious treasure trove of art and memory, a symbol of the identity of Castelmezzano and its community.
