Castelmezzano

Castelmezzano, a charming village perched in the heart of the Lucanian Dolomites, is a place that embodies the very essence of Basilicata. Situated about 600 meters above sea level, the village stands out for its strategic and spectacular location, protected by imposing sandstone rock massifs that have been shaped over the centuries by the force of wind and rain. The atmosphere of Castelmezzano is unique and magical, so much so that it almost looks like a medieval painting come to life before visitors' eyes.

To access this pretty village, it is necessary to pass through a tunnel carved into the rock, which offers a first glimpse of the natural beauty and history that characterize the area. This tunnel, located at the entrance to the village, opens onto a small gorge that frames the surrounding landscape, creating an atmosphere of mystery and wonder. Castelmezzano's strategic location has played a crucial role in its history, serving as a point of defense in past centuries. The origins of the village date back to the 10th century AD, and its name derives from "Castrum Medianum," the middle castle, built by the Normans between the 11th and 13th centuries. This nomenclature reflects its central position with respect to the neighboring towns of Pietrapertosa and Brindisi Montagna, creating a link of historical and cultural continuity between these places.

Today, the remains of the castle and its fortified structures are still visible, with the walls telling stories of a glorious past. Among the most significant remains are a cistern for collecting meteor water and a flight of steps carved into the rock, which led to the highest lookout point. From there, the village watchmen could keep an eye on the Basento River valley and warn the inhabitants of any threats. This historical legacy is what makes Castelmezzano a fascinating place, where nature and human intervention come together in perfect balance.

The village has a typical medieval structure, presenting a concentric cluster of houses built of sandstone, with stone slab roofs set into the rock. The narrow, winding streets and alleys invite you to get lost on a path of discovery, while numerous steep staircases wind between the houses, leading to breathtaking views of the Lucanian Dolomites. The beauty of this mountain landscape is further enhanced by lush vegetation and a temperate climate, making Castelmezzano an ideal place for nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts.

The beating heart of the village is Piazza Caizzo, where stands the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, an example of Romanesque architecture that captivates with its majesty. The church, with its elegant facade, is a place of worship and gathering for the inhabitants, who gather here to celebrate local traditions and religious holidays. The square is a lively meeting point where residents exchange stories and anecdotes, keeping the historical memory of the place alive.

Outside the town center, paths, steps and stone bridges lead to the Caperrino valley. Here, visitors can admire the remains of old mills, built of dry stone with traditional local stone slab roofs, known as "chiang." These mills tell the story of the area's rural economy and traditions related to grain processing, testifying to a way of life that has been handed down over time.

Castelmezzano is also part of the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Park, a protected area that offers an extraordinary variety of scenic and natural beauty. Here, nature lovers can explore trails surrounded by greenery, discover local wildlife and admire timeless views. The presence of ancient megalithic walls, dating back to the 4th century B.C., adds further charm to this area rich in history and culture.

In short, Castelmezzano is a place where the past and the present are intertwined in an embrace of beauty and tradition. Its spectacular location, historic structures and the warmth of its inhabitants make this village a jewel worth discovering, a corner of Basilicata that continues to enchant anyone who sets foot there.
