The Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres stands in Lentiscosa, a small inland hamlet within the municipality of Camerota. With its rectangular layout, it bears witness to the Basilian monks. Frescoes can be seen on the side walls, the central wall and the barrel vault. These are sacred images that reflect Byzantine culture. The figures of the saints, arranged in succession, have simple forms and are almost identical in size, filling all the walls of the interior. In a niche above the altar, we see the wooden sculpture of Saint Mary of the Martyrs with the Child. It is the only such ancient artefact to have survived among the known churches of the lower Cilento.
