The Cave of San Michele is a natural karst cave, 52 meters long, located under the sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo in Monte Sant’Angelo, in the province of Foggia.
The facade of the cave, made of gray rock boulders, is partly plastered, and the entrance is protected by a wrought iron gate dating back to 1932 and a wooden door dating back to 1898.
Inside, the floor is made of rectangular stone blocks, on which you can see stalagmites and engravings of hands and feet left by the faithful.
The sacristy is located in the west wing of the cave and contains an altar with a bas-relief of the face of St. Michael.
The high altar is located at the back of the cave and is surmounted by an urn with four marble columns. It houses a perfect copy of the statue of St. Michael the Archangel kept in the basilica of Monte Sant’Angelo.
Numerous artifacts found in the areas in front of the entrance and around the cave indicate that it was inhabited as early as the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods.
