Its name has undergone various transformations: Tugana, Tuganae, Tegana, Teana. Still today it is called by the inhabitants The Tegana, in the dialectal form. The toponym Teana (in Greek Theanò) derives from the name of the wife of Pythagoras, legend has it that the country was founded by belonging to the Pythagorean school. The Teanese Carnival is one of the carnivals in the Lucana tradition. The focus of the event is the process to Carnival, also known as Bear of Teana, a representation that takes place between the alleys of the town and culminates in the central square.
