It is the country of monumental sculptures by Marino di Teana, recognized by international critics as one of the greatest metal sculptors of the twentieth century. His works of rare beauty are set up in an “open-air” museum, in different points of the village. The main monuments that can be admired in the village are the ruins of the Lombard castle, the church of Madonna del Carmine and the chapels of San Cristofaro and Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Its name has undergone various transformations: Tugana, Tuganae, Tegana, Teana. Still today it is called by the inhabitants The Tegana, in the dialectal form. The toponym Teana (in Greek Theanò) derives from the name of the wife of Pythagoras, legend has it that the country was founded by belonging to the Pythagorean school. In the past it was known for the cultivation of grapes from silk between the main monuments we mention the ruins of the Castle longobardo, the Church of the Madonna del Carmine, the chapel of San Cristofaro and the Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It is reminiscent of the source of the Walloon locations from which Teana obtains supplies of drinking water.
The Teanese Carnival is one of the carnivals in the Lucana tradition. The focus of the event is the process to Carnival, also known as Bear of Teana, a representation that takes place between the alleys of the town and culminates in the central square. The protagonists are the poor peasant Carnuvular, his wife Quaremma and of course the bear that will generate no little commotion. Because of its immoral life Carnival is arrested and prosecuted with an amusing comparison between lawyer and accuser.
