About the village

San Giovanni in Fiore is the oldest, largest and most populated village of the Sila and is located a few kilometers from the Alta Val di Neto and at the feet of Monte Nero. Often referred to as the "Capital of Sila", San Giovanni in Fiore is first of all a mountain village. The urban center, located in the middle of the Sila Grande, is surrounded by mountains, some of which are among the highest of the whole upland of Sila. Considered of great naturalistic value, much of the area is protected as it is part of the Sila National Park. Its value is confirmed by the expanse of forests and by the presence of lakes and numerous watercourses. In addition, in recent decades, there was an increase in fauna, encouraged by the restrictive measures of hunting that facilitated the repopulation of various animal species. San Giovanni in Fiore links its history to the figure of its renowned abbot, Gioacchino da Fiore, who in the twelfth century founded the Florensian Abbey, one of the largest religious buildings in Calabria. Apart from having an incredibly beautiful old town full of views, with remarkable buildings of historical and artistic interest, San Giovanni in Fiore still preserves legends, traditions, such as weaving and ancient recipes. Its typical cooking is known and renowned throughout the region, especially for the preparation of its typical dessert, Pitta Mpigliata, prepared both at Christmas and at Easter, but also the Turdilli with honey, the mostaccioli and muccellati.
