Games of Saint Margaret
Event description
On 20 July 2026, Vernazza celebrates its patron saint with the traditional Games of Saint Margaret, one of the most cherished festivals in the Cinque Terre, recognised as one of the Authentic Events of Liguria 2026.
The festival pays homage to Saint Margaret of Antioch, a figure deeply linked to the history and identity of the village. According to tradition, a relic of the saint miraculously washed ashore on the coast of Vernazza, leading to the construction of the splendid Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch, which overlooks the sea and is now a symbol of the village.
Every year, the community renews this ancient devotion with a day that combines spirituality, folklore and community participation. The celebrations begin with the religious procession dedicated to the patron saint, followed by the traditional Games of Santa Margherita, which involve children, families and visitors in a festive and convivial atmosphere.
Throughout the day, the historic centre comes alive with music, entertainment and opportunities for socialising, creating an authentic atmosphere that reflects the strong bond between Vernazza, the sea and its traditions.
The event will draw to a close with the traditional fireworks display, which will light up the harbour and the sea of the Cinque Terre, offering one of the most evocative moments of the Ligurian summer.
The Giochi di Santa Margherita offer a special opportunity to discover Vernazza through its most authentic traditions and to experience a festival which, for generations, has brought together faith, culture and community spirit in one of Italy’s most charming villages.
