Wild Boar Hunt 2026

📅 12 August 2026 – 15 August 2026

Event description

From 13 to 15 August 2026, the fortified village of Mondavio will step back in time with the 64th Historical Re-enactment of the Wild Boar Hunt, one of the oldest and most prestigious historical events in the Marche region. For over sixty years, the historic centre and the majestic Rocca Roveresca have provided the backdrop for an event that recreates the atmosphere of the Renaissance through shows, processions, banquets and performances inspired by life at the noble courts. For three days, ladies, knights, soldiers, flag-wavers, musicians and jesters bring the charm of the 15th century back to life, transforming Mondavio into a veritable open-air theatre.

Strolling through the streets of the village, visitors are drawn into a rich programme of re-enactments featuring parades in period costume, jousting tournaments, demonstrations of ancient hunting techniques, flag-waving displays and entertainment that evoke the atmosphere of the great Renaissance festivals. Every corner of the historic centre becomes part of the performance, offering an immersive experience where history, culture and entertainment blend into a narrative that captivates adults and children alike.

One of the most eagerly awaited highlights of the event is the traditional Renaissance banquet, during which dishes inspired by 16th-century recipes are served. The star of the show is, of course, the wild boar, accompanied by spiced soups, roasts, crostini, traditional desserts and the renowned wines of the Marche hills. The whole experience is enhanced by the presence of jesters, musicians and performers who liven up the banquet, allowing participants to enjoy an authentic courtly experience.

Each edition of the re-enactment is dedicated to a historical and literary theme. For 2026, the event draws inspiration from ‘Orlando Innamorato’ by Matteo Maria Boiardo, the famous 15th-century chivalric poem. The story revolves around the arrival of Princess Angelica at the court of Charlemagne, an event that upsets the balance between the paladins Orlando and Rinaldo, both of whom are in love with the young woman. Amidst duels, magic, illusions and battles against the army of the Moorish king Agramante, the tale illustrates how love can throw even the most valiant hero into turmoil, becoming a force capable of overcoming reason and altering the fate of men.

Through shows, performances and stage designs inspired by the poem, the audience will be taken on a journey into the world of Renaissance chivalry, where courage is intertwined with emotions and great feats coexist with passions, desires and inner conflicts. The chosen theme further enriches the event, offering a narrative framework that showcases Italy’s cultural and literary heritage alongside historical re-enactment.

The Historical Re-enactment of the Wild Boar Hunt is now one of the flagship events of the Marche summer and offers a unique opportunity to discover Mondavio, one of the most beautiful villages in the Marche region, through an experience that combines history, theatre, gastronomy and tradition. Three days in which the past takes centre stage once more, offering visitors authentic thrills against the evocative backdrop of the Rocca Roveresca.
