Nestled between the sea and the hills, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, Ascea is one of the most characteristic towns in the Cilento region, standing out for the variety and quality of its natural, archaeological and cultural heritage. Situated in the southern part of the province of Salerno, between Casal Velino and Pisciotta, this destination captivates visitors with its perfect balance between coast and hinterland, offering landscapes that gently transition from the plains to the hills and mountains.
The territory of Ascea is in fact divided into three distinct zones that define its identity. The flat area extends to the sea and includes the renowned hamlet of Marina di Ascea and the picturesque Piana di Velia, the archaeological heart of the region. As you climb higher, you encounter the hills, covered in centuries-old olive groves, whilst the inland areas rise to over 500 metres in altitude and are home to small villages such as Catona, Mandia and Terradura, where life still flows to authentic rhythms deeply rooted in the land.
The historical soul of the area is inextricably linked to ancient Elea-Velia, a Magna Graecia colony founded in the 6th century BC and now one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. The present-day village of Ascea, on the other hand, developed during the medieval period, when the population abandoned the settlement of Castellammare della Bruca – built on the ruins of the ancient city’s acropolis – to take refuge in the surrounding hills due to the economic hardships and epidemics that afflicted the area. Even today, this link with the past is evident in the village’s layout and its widespread cultural heritage.
Among the main attractions, the Archaeological Park of Velia stands out; now administratively linked to the archaeological area of Paestum, it is the true jewel in the crown of the region. Here, visitors can trace the history of a city that was not only a commercial and strategic centre but also the cradle of the Eleatic School of Philosophy, with figures such as Parmenides, Zeno and Xenophanes, who were key figures in a revolution in Western thought. The site preserves extraordinary remains, including the famous Porta Rosa, a symbol of Greek engineering, as well as residential quarters, thermal baths and the acropolis.
Alongside its archaeological heritage, the village offers charming views and places of interest such as Palazzo Ricci-De Dominicis, which is linked to local history, and the war memorial, a symbol of collective remembrance. The landscape is enhanced by the Cilento coastline, with around seven kilometres of sandy beaches alternating with rocky stretches, such as the striking cliffs near the Torre del Telegrafo. This is where the Sentiero degli Innamorati (Lovers’ Trail) runs, one of the most scenic routes in the area, whilst other nature trails link Ascea to the inland hamlets and the marina, offering experiences immersed in the Mediterranean scrub.
Ascea is a destination that can be fully enjoyed in every season. During the summer, the clear sea, mild temperatures and maritime traditions attract numerous visitors, whilst in the other seasons the area lends itself to a slower, more rural form of tourism, consisting of hikes, visits to farms and stays in close contact with nature. The presence of the railway, the cycle path along the seafront and well-organised services help to make your stay even more enjoyable.
What also makes the experience unique is the region’s rich culinary heritage, which fully embodies the culture of the Mediterranean diet. Among the local specialities, the extra virgin olive oil made from the Pisciottana cultivar, the Cilento white fig (PDO), chestnuts and the ‘Tabaccuogno’ bean from Mandia – recognised as a traditional agri-food product – stand out. There is no shortage of delicacies such as ‘ind’à murtedda’ mozzarella, wrapped in myrtle leaves, goat’s milk cacioricotta cheese and Menaica anchovies, a symbol of traditional Cilento fishing.
The area is also enriched by events and traditions that mark the year, such as the evocative sea procession of the Madonna di Portosalvo and the folk festivals dedicated to ancient flavours, including the Festa degli Antichi Sapori in Mandia. Added to these are tales and legends that help make Ascea even more fascinating, such as the story of the discovery of the relics of St Matthew in Velia itself, an episode that marked the religious history of the area.
Ascea thus proves to be a truly authentic destination, managing to blend history, nature and culture in a rare harmony. It is a place where the legacy of Magna Graecia meets the everyday life of a Cilento village, offering visitors a complete experience, rich in landscapes, traditions and a deep-rooted identity.
