Assedio al Castello – Siege of the Castle

From 17 to 19 July 2026, the village of Gradara will once again bring to life one of the most fascinating chapters in its history with ‘Assedio al Castello’ (Siege of the Castle), the eagerly awaited historical re-enactment commemorating the famous siege of 1446, when the fortress, then under the rule of the Malatesta family, withstood 43 days and 43 nights of attacks by the armies of the Sforza and Montefeltro families, earning its reputation as an impregnable castle.
Now in its 11th edition, the event will take place entirely within the medieval village, transforming the streets, squares and fortress walls into a vast open-air stage where history, spectacle and tradition merge into an immersive experience.
Among the main new features of the 2026 edition is the spectacular Joust of the Noble Knights, featuring authentic equestrian duels with bladed weapons and lances at the ready, bringing the great medieval tournaments back to life. Alongside the jousts, the programme features historical encampments, scenes of military life, re-enacted battles, costumed processions, falconry displays, early music concerts, Renaissance dances and the evocative flight of birds of prey.
The most eagerly awaited moment will be on Saturday 18 July, when the walls of the Rocca will provide the backdrop for an extraordinary pyromusical spectacle, featuring fireworks synchronised to music, preceded by medieval bombards and the symbolic evacuation of the village, recreating the atmosphere of the ancient siege.
Over the three days, visitors will also be able to stroll through the medieval encampment, watch demonstrations of ancient crafts and experience first-hand the atmosphere of one of Italy’s most beautiful fortified villages. A free shuttle service connects the main car parks with the event area, making it easy for visitors to get there.
‘Siege of the Castle’ is one of the most important historical re-enactment events in the Marche region, offering adults and children alike an exciting journey through the world of knights, ladies, falconers, soldiers and ancient traditions, set against the extraordinary backdrop of the Rocca di Gradara.
