Marzamemi CineFest

📅 6 September 2026 – 10 September 2026

Event description

From 6 to 10 September 2026, the picturesque seaside village of Marzamemi, a hamlet of Pachino in the province of Syracuse, will host a new edition of the Marzamemi CineFest – International Festival of Mediterranean Identities, an event that celebrates cinema as a means of dialogue between cultures, peoples and traditions that have been coming together on the shores of the Mediterranean for millennia.

At the heart of the event is the International Short Film Competition, which brings directors, screenwriters and production teams from various countries to the village, transforming Marzamemi into a hub for artistic and cultural exchange where the language of cinema becomes an opportunity for encounter and reflection.

The festival was founded with the aim of promoting the cultural roots of the Mediterranean, telling the stories of the identities that have been shaped through continuous exchanges, cross-fertilisation and new cultural fusions. The theme “Roots, Identities, New Fusions” serves as the central thread of the event, bringing together cinema, art, music and contemporary creativity in a journey that looks simultaneously to tradition and the future.

Marzamemi provides the ideal setting for this event. The ancient fishing village, with its historic tuna fishery, the picturesque Piazza Regina Margherita and the characteristic stone houses overlooking the sea, has long been one of Sicily’s most fascinating film locations. Highly successful films and productions have been shot here, such as L’Avventura by Michelangelo Antonioni, *Sud* by Gabriele Salvatores, *L’Uomo delle Stelle* by Giuseppe Tornatore, *Kaos* by the Taviani brothers, *Il Viaggio* by Vittorio De Sica, numerous episodes of *Commissario Montalbano*, right up to the more recent *Stranizza d’Amuri* by Beppe Fiorello.

During the festival’s five days, the village comes alive with screenings, meetings with directors and film stars, debates, cultural events and activities dedicated to promoting the local area. The event involves the entire local community, showcasing the finest aspects of the Val di Noto, the seafaring tradition and Sicilian hospitality, striking a perfect balance between culture, tourism and local development.

The Marzamemi CineFest is now one of the most original film festivals in southern Italy, successfully combining the magic of the big screen with the extraordinary beauty of one of Sicily’s most iconic villages.
