San Martino di Castrozza is one of the most charming Alpine villages in Trentino, situated in the Upper Primiero Valley, in eastern Trentino, at an altitude of 1,487 metres at the foot of the majestic Pale di San Martino, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it is one of the five districts of the Municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza, formed in 2016 through the merger of the historic municipalities of Fiera di Primiero, Siror, Tonadico and Transacqua. Surrounded by the Paneveggio – Pale di San Martino Nature Park, the village nestles in a picturesque grassy basin offering one of the most spectacular views of the Dolomites.
The view sweeps across the iconic peaks of the Dolomites, such as Cimon della Pala, Vezzana, Rosetta, Sass Maor, the Cime di Val di Roda and Cima della Madonna, whilst on the opposite side one can make out Colbricon, Cavallazza and, in the distance, the Vette Feltrine with the unmistakable silhouette of Monte Pavione. This extraordinary scenery has made San Martino di Castrozza one of Italy’s most renowned mountain resorts, appreciated since the nineteenth century by the pioneers of mountaineering and today an ideal destination for those wishing to experience the mountains in every season, amidst nature, traditions, sport and unforgettable views.
A stroll through the centre of San Martino di Castrozza means soaking up the authentic atmosphere of the Alps: elegant historic hotels, wooden chalets, traditional shops, cafés, restaurants and a lively pedestrianised high street make the village a welcoming place all year round. The view always takes centre stage, with the Pale di San Martino towering over the village and offering, especially at sunset, the unmistakable spectacle of the ‘enrosadira’, when the Dolomite cliffs are bathed in shades of pink and orange.
Although it is one of the best-known mountain resorts in the Dolomites, San Martino di Castrozza retains its authentic character and relaxed pace, making it ideal both for those wishing to enjoy a holiday surrounded by nature and for those seeking comfort, tradition and hospitality. Its prime location also makes it the perfect base from which to explore some of the most spectacular mountains in the Alps, whilst retaining the charm of a village that, for over a century, has continued to captivate travellers from all over the world.
