Calabrian Tarantella Festival

📅 27 June 2026 – 28 June 2026

On 27 and 28 June 2026, Saracena will once again become the capital of Calabrian folk tradition with the 11th edition of the Calabrian Tarantella Festival, one of the summer’s most captivating folk events in the heart of the Pollino National Park. Two evenings dedicated to music, dance, folk culture and the authentic flavours of Calabria, in a village that has preserved one of the most fascinating expressions of regional identity for centuries.

The event offers a unique opportunity to discover and experience the Calabrian tarantella up close, a dance that symbolises the traditions of Southern Italy. It is not merely a show, but a genuine collective ritual involving musicians, dancers and the audience in an experience of rhythm, energy and participation.

At the heart of the festival is the traditional ‘ròta’, the circle formed by the participants within which the dance comes to life. Here, the dancers take turns following the instructions of the “mastru i ballu”, a traditional figure who coordinates the succession of couples and regulates the flow of the dance. The dances can be performed by male-female, male-male or female-female couples, in accordance with a tradition that tells stories of courtship, friendship, confrontation and community.

The movements of the tarantella consist of rapid, rhythmic steps accompanied by the sound of traditional Calabrian instruments. The positions of the arms and body take on symbolic meanings that evoke ancient rituals, using the language of dance to convey profound aspects of the region’s folk and rural culture.

Over the two evenings, Saracena will come alive with musical performances, folk groups, dance displays and events dedicated to celebrating local traditions. There will be plenty of food stalls and tastings, allowing visitors to discover the region’s finest produce, including local specialities, Calabrian cuisine and the famous Moscato di Saracena, a Slow Food Presidium and a true symbol of local winemaking.

The Calabrian Tarantella Festival also offers an excellent opportunity to visit Saracena and its surroundings. Situated on the edge of the Pollino National Park, the village boasts spectacular landscapes, nature trails and a historical heritage that makes a stay here even more appealing for tourists and culture enthusiasts.

With live music, traditional dances and authentic flavours, the Calabrian Tarantella Festival remains one of the most iconic events of the Calabrian summer, capturing the true spirit of a land rich in traditions and hospitality.
