Church of Maria Santissima di Portosalvo

Church of Maria Santissima di Portosalvo

Overlooking the seafront at Ascea Marina, the Church of Maria Santissima di Portosalvo is a place of worship deeply rooted in the life and traditions of the local community. Dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen, it serves as a spiritual anchor for those who live by the sea every day and for visitors wishing to experience the true spirit of this coastal village.

Built in 1954, the church is distinguished by a simple, unadorned style, in harmony with the surrounding seascape. Its understated lines reflect the popular devotion that has, over time, made it a symbol of protection and hope for the local people. Inside stands the statue of the Virgin Mary, the focal point of local religious life and the centrepiece of one of the most heartfelt moments of the year.

On 27 August, in fact, a deeply evocative tradition is revived: the statue of the Virgin Mary is carried in procession out to sea, accompanied by a procession of decorated and illuminated boats. It is a moving spectacle, in which faith and tradition merge amidst the sound of prayers and the reflection of lights on the water, drawing in not only the faithful but also numerous visitors.

The Church of Portosalvo is not merely a religious building, but a place where the bond between man and the sea is manifested in all its intensity. Here, amidst the scent of the sea and the slow rhythm of the waves, one senses a sincere devotion that spans generations, making this small sanctuary one of the most authentic symbols of Ascea Marina.
