Church of Saints Peter and Paul

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

In the heart of Agropoli’s historic center, a few steps from the Angevin Aragonese Castle, stands the Mother Church of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the city’s oldest and most significant places of worship. Its strategic location, at the center of the medieval road system, and its proximity to the main fortification of the village, testify to its central role in the religious and urban life of Agropoli since ancient times.

The origins of the church most likely date back to late antiquity. This is confirmed by a letter from Pope Gregory the Great dated 593 A.D., which mentions the presence of the Pestano bishop in the area and refers to devotion to Saints Peter and Paul. The dedication of the church is in fact connected to the tradition that St. Paul touched the coast of Agropolese during his travels, while St. Peter, a fisherman from Galilee, is symbolically linked to the village’s seafaring community.

During recent restorations, important archaeological finds from the Greco-Roman and medieval periods emerged, including ancient columns and wall fragments. These remains are now visible through an impressive transparent floor, allowing visitors to literally walk on history and admire the original foundations of the church.

The building, renovated several times over the centuries, features a single nave embellished with a wooden choir, pulpit, and confessionals. The architectural simplicity of the exterior contrasts with the intimacy and spirituality of the interior, which retains a collected and solemn atmosphere perfect for prayer and reflection.

The Patron Saints of Agropoli

Every June 29, the city celebrates with great participation the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, patron saints of Agropoli. The occasion is among the most heartfelt in the local community and includes religious services, processions and moments of popular celebration. The church thus becomes a hub of faith and town identity, renewing the deep bond between Agropoli and its spiritual protectors.
