The Church of St. Francis is one of Alatri’s historical gems, built by the Franciscan order in the second half of the 13th century. The structure retains its original façade with a pointed arch portal and a rose window with radial columns, evidence of medieval architectural aesthetics.
Inside, however, the interior was transformed during the 17th century, adopting a Baroque style but retaining its historical and artistic importance. Among the works preserved, the church houses a valuable Deposition, the work of a 17th-century Neapolitan school, embellished with exquisite artistic craftsmanship.
One of the church’s most significant treasures is the relic of the cloak of St Francis of Assisi, donated by the saint himself to the city in 1222. This relic makes the church an important place of worship and pilgrimage for devotees of the saint.
Visit the Church of St Francis in Alatri to experience a unique journey through the art, history and spirituality that characterise the legacy of Christianity in the heart of Lazio.
