The Acropolis of Alatri, located in the municipality of Alatri in the province of Frosinone, è one of the cityà s most famous and ancient monuments. Dating back to pre-Roman times, this extraordinary cyclopean construction is an essential stop for history and archaeology enthusiasts.
Characterized by mighty walls made of polygonal work, the Acropolis encloses a raised area of about 19,000 square meters, located in the center of the city’s built-up area. The majesty and preciation of the construction still leave visitors breathless.
The Acropolis has two entrance gates that are worth admiring: the Major Gate, located on the southern side and characterized by an imposing monolithic lintel, and the Minor Gate, less grandiose but just as fascinating, with its narrow, perfectly preserved ascending corridor.
Nearby the two gates, three ancient niches and the remains of a portico, built by the censor Lucius Betilienus Varus in the second century B.C., are visible, adding to the Acropolis’s charm.
