The Church of San Rocco in San Paolo Albanese, situated in the square of the same name, was built in 1614, as attested by the inscription in Roman numerals carved into the archway separating the chancel from the nave. The building was erected on the site of a pre-existing religious structure, of which the quadrangular chancel, covered by a dome in the Byzantine tradition, remains.

This dome still preserves interesting pictorial decorations: the four evangelists are depicted on the pendentives, whilst the Last Judgement is depicted on the vault, in an iconographic ensemble that evokes Eastern spirituality. The church was built by the community of Albanian refugees who arrived in the area in the 16th century to escape Ottoman rule, and fully reflects Arbëreshë culture and devotion.

Since its foundation, the building has been dedicated to Saint Roch, a saint invoked as a protector against epidemics, and inside it preserves frescoes by unknown artists, an expression of the popular piety of the time.

In 1919, with the establishment of the Eparchy of Lungro by Pope Benedict XV, the church became part of the Italian-Albanian Catholic Church of the Byzantine Rite, thus keeping alive a religious tradition that combines elements of Eastern and Western culture.
