Located in Teglio’s main square, the Church of Santa Eufemia is the village’s principal religious building and one of its most recognisable landmarks. The structures visible today date largely from the early 16th century, but the building retains traces of different eras, as evidenced by architectural details and some Romanesque marble reused in the façade and the small side portal on the left.
The church stands at the foot of the hill on which the ancient Castrum Tilii once stood, the castle from which the name Valtellina is said to derive. All that remains of this medieval complex are the tower and the nearby little church of Santo Stefano, elements that help to tell the story of the village’s historical origins and its development over time.
The church has a basilica-style layout and its façade is distinguished by its elegance and harmony. The marble rose window, decorated with a delicate figure of the Madonna, immediately catches the eye, whilst the finely crafted columns frame the Renaissance portal created in 1506 by the Rodari family of sculptors, among the most active in the Lombardy region at that time.
Inside, the space is divided into three naves covered by cross vaults, which lend the interior a sense of balance and solemnity. The overall effect reflects the building’s historical layers, where elements from different eras coexist harmoniously, creating an intimate yet evocative atmosphere.
The Church of Santa Eufemia remains the spiritual heart of Teglio to this day, a place where history, art and tradition converge, offering visitors an authentic glimpse of the Valtellina of yesteryear.
