The Church of Sant’Antioco Martire in Atzara, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, is a fine example of Catalan Gothic architecture in Sardinia. The façade, broad and harmonious, is constructed entirely of trachyte carved with great precision; it is crowned by a cornice supported by trefoil-shaped battlements, a distinctive feature of local architecture. At the centre is the portal, surmounted by a rose window with a radiating pattern of small columns and arches, whilst two semicircular side windows illuminate the interior naves.
On the right-hand side stands the square-plan bell tower, also built of trachyte, characterised by sections marked by string courses and single-lancet openings, both pointed and round-arched. The tower is topped by a stone balustrade, similar to that of the nearby rural sanctuary of San Mauro. In the past, it was surmounted by a dome with a large copper sphere and a cross, which was later removed for safety reasons. A curious feature that has now disappeared was the small stone sculpture known as Su moru sacru, situated on the façade and used as a rainwater drain.
