The Antonio Ortiz Echague Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Atzara was born from an idea of the painter atzarese Corriga Antonio, one of the most important Sardinian artists contemporaries already pupil of Figari, in order to find the right place to the history of the painters who in various capacities stayed to Atzara in the past. The birth of the Pinacoteca can thus reconnect to the vicissitudes of the early twentieth century, when they came to Atzara painters spanish costumbristi Antonio Ortiz Echagüe (1883-1942) and Eduardo Chicharro Agüera (1873-1949) , fascinated by aspects of the culture of the local traditional. The Sardinian city, became the center of the elaboration of a pictorial language autochthonous, but with Iberian inspiration. It became, then in the years an unavoidable crossroads for artistic training of the greatest painters of the twentieth century, many of whom there stayed in more or less long periods.
Being a collection very diverse, not homogeneous and without an expressive theme well precise was chosen an exhibition policy that enhances the works in their diversity. The themes dealt with in the works are different, we find in fact of the traditional themes but also landscapes treated according espressionistiche trends. Variety of styles, therefore, of historical periods, but always great artistic personalities that have marked the history of art, not only of Atzara, but of the whole of Sardinia.
