Built in 1832 and proclaimed a sanctuary in 1941, the Church of San Francesco De Geronimo in Grottaglie is dedicated to the saint of Grottaglie origin, Francesco de Geronimo, whose remains are preserved there. It is characterised by the austere style of its façade, marked by fluted pilasters ending in Ionic capitals. The building is embellished by a triangular tympanum and a majolica dome with a beautiful diamond pattern. The interior, in the shape of a Greek cross with three naves, features remarkable pictorial decorations, including the Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, attributed to Cesare Fracanzano, the paintings on the high altar, by the Grottaglie painter Arcangelo Spagnulo, and, in the chapel dedicated to St. Joseph, an oval depicting the Miracle of the Roses, by another illustrious citizen, Ciro Fanigliulo.
The chapel dedicated to the saint is located to the left of the high altar. It houses the bronze urn containing the sacred remains, the work of Vincenzo Catello of Naples. From here, a small staircase leads to the saint’s house.
