Located in the beautiful hilly landscape of the municipality’s hamlet of the same name, the structure consists of a wall, at the center of which is the so-called “Torre Matildica,” which from its origins had sighting functions, but also represented a place of command (the keep), since the residence of the lords of the castle was located there. There are definite records, of restorations carried out by the Rangoni family in the 18th century, at the time when the church inside the castle was rebuilt. Square in plan, with a mixed brick and stone wall structure, the Torre Matildica is crowned by a projecting apparatus, possibly 15th-century or from the second half of the 14th century, consisting of corbels, supporting Ghibelline-style battlements, joined together at the top by arches, which carry the four-pitch roof.
The tower currently houses the “Museum of Hemp” (cultural heritage and tradition of the local community) and the “Congrega del Balsamela” (history and traditions of Apple Balsamic Vinegar). It can be visited during public openings of the castle. Beginning in the 12th century the fortified complex was restored and enlarged; in particular, a part of the feudal palace was erected next to the tower protecting the entrance to the castle, and an underground gallery was built that still connects the palace to the tower. Around the 16th century the buildings underwent major transformations: the so-called “Stanze dei Vescovi” (Bishops’ Rooms), whose ceiling features ancient wooden ceilings and a cycle of Renaissance frescoes, date from this period.
